For any bassoonist and reed maker, the holding mandrel is perhaps one of the most used and underrated tools in the vast arsenal of widgets we use to make the perfect bassoon reed. Most holding mandrels are simply too long & thin in the handle area, and too long in the mandrel area. These mandrels address both issues. Plus- we all have very different sized hands. For a tool that is used so much of the time by bassoonists, comfort and a "good fit" should be important. So-two sizes are offered, depending on your hand size. The 2 1/2" sized mandrel is more comfortable if you have small to medium sized hands, The 3" handle will be more comfortable if you have medium to large sized hands.
THIS LISTING IS FOR THOSE WITH MEDIUM TO LARGE SIZED HANDS.
If you are unsure...check my other listings & order both sizes. Then-just return the one that does not fit for a full credit.
Additionally, there has been a further attempt to make these handles more aesthetically pleasing. Thus, 6 different wood options are available.
This listing is for a handle made out of TIGER STRIPED MAPLE.
All handles are hand lathed by me, left in their natural color, and then French polished for a gorgeous deep luster finish.
The stainless steel mandrel tip also has been purposely made shorter so that your reed is not hanging out too far in space as you are working on your reed. This is especially important when doing critical tip work. Made of stainless steel (not brass or standard less expensive steel), the tip will not rust or tarnish.
Manufactured here in Cleveland, Ohio by a high tech machining company that does most of its work for GE & the military, the stainless steel tip is specially designed to match the ideal internal dimensions of the bassoon tube at the butt end.
Finally, the price of this mandrel is a real money saver when you look at prices from Rieger and all the other double reed supply houses out there. I can do this because I do all the work myself, and have no costly overhead, inventory, or staff. I am a one-man operation, self-admitted bassoon geek, and am not relying on any of this as a primary source of income
