For auction is an outstanding original Civil War era handmade folding knife. This is a very unique piece. It measures 7 3/8" long overall, with a 3.25" blade. It features a stunning handle profile, a drop point carbon steel blade, carbon steel bolsters, buffalo horn handle, and rivet pins. The blade is marked 91 Barge. Barge is obviously the maker, I cant find any info on Barge. Who knows what 91 stands for, could be the model, or the year it was made(1891). I dont think that it is the year it was made, the design and materials point towards the mid 1800s in my opinion. The rivet pins were really popular in the mid 1800s, you dont really see them on knives from the turn of the century, except on maybe kitchen knives, and then a few pop back up around ww2 from theater made knives. The style and profile of this knife sre gorgeous, i love this handle. The craftsmanship is very good, this knife was made by a skilled knifemaker. The blade has been sharpened in somewhat recent history but it appears that the blade has still retained most of its original profile, i believe that it was always a drop point straight edge blade, the edge has just been sharpened back a bit over time. The knife functions perfectly, very strong spring, has great snap, blade seats properly. The buffalo horn handle scales are in very good shape, NO cracks, there is a chip on the butt edge(pictured). The top 2 pins seem to be carbon steel but i believe that the bottom pin is silver, possibly nickel. Truly an outstanding piece. Fast shipping. Thank you.
