    Description

This is one of the more amazing things I've ever seen. And I have 2 of them. This is #1 and #2 is available in another auction. This is a doll that was used in sewing the way you would use a sewing basket. On the front of the dress are layers of silk to hold pins, where the "belly button" would be on the doll is an indentation for holding a thimble, and below that is a triangular pouch for holding scissors (scissors not included). The skirt makes up a large pouch to hold threads or fabric pieces and at the top of that is a jade ring. It's likely I missed some aspect of the usefulness of this doll. And on to the beauty of this! She wears a headpiece with beveled mirrors and tiny gold couched embroidery. There are mirrors on the bodice. The skirt is pleated and along the front is the most minuscule embroidery. There is a peacock, crane and other birds amongst couched metallic threads. I would imagine the head is some sort of pottery from the sound it makes when tapped. I can only imagine that this is something that would have belonged to a very wealthy woman or the seamstress of a wealthy woman. At first I thought this might have been made of bits of fabric gleaned from other clothing but every bit appears to be custom to this doll. 14 inches long by about 5 inches wide. Cord at top for hanging. Please feel free to ask questions.
